Objective :
Description :
A "Composite Gazetteer" has been set up as a computer database,
starting from the gazetteers of 13 countries (Version 1.0).
The International Toponymic Guidelines for the Antarctic have been drafted
and approved by the WG GGI and submitted to the SCAR Executive.
Actions under this program will include:
- Promote the guidelines and, if required by the SCAR,
modified as needed.
- Produce Version 2.0 of composite gazetteer. To this purpose:
- receive the answers to the questions submitted to the
WG members at the meeting in Rome; deadline: December 31, 1994.
- add the missing gazetteers (Chile, Belgium, etc.); gazetteers to be
received not later than December 31, 1994;
- add the GEBCO names for undersea features; to be received not later than
December 31, 1994;
- fix anomalies, take into account suggestions and make additions by
March 31, 1995;
- publish Version 2.0 in the form of a computer file, and circulate at the
end of 1995/beginning of 1996 among the "collaborator" member.
After issuing the Version 2.0 of the Composite Gazetteer, the following
additions or improvements will be introduced:
- update the Composite Gazetteer with the addition of
new entries;
- by the use of a suitable software (UNICODE?) all existing diacritical
signs will eventually be introduced in the Composite Gazetteer;
- new fields will be added; among them, a comprehensive description of the
geographical feature is of relevant importance;
- present the results at the next WG GGI meeting.
